The Case for Boredom

The average adult now reaches for their phone within seconds of feeling bored. Not minutes — seconds. A red light, an elevator, the fifteen seconds before a meeting starts: all of it gets filled automatically, reflexively, before the feeling of boredom has any chance to actually register.

We've come to treat boredom as a malfunction. Something to patch immediately, the way you'd silence a smoke alarm. But a growing body of neuroscience suggests we've gotten this almost entirely backward — that boredom isn't a problem with the brain. It's a state the brain needs, and one we've engineered almost completely out of modern life.

What the Brain Does When It Isn't Doing Anything

In the early 2000s, neuroscientists identified something called the default mode network — a set of brain regions that becomes active specifically when you're not focused on an external task. Not sleeping. Not concentrating. Just idle: staring out a window, waiting in line, doing the dishes without a podcast on.

For years, the assumption was that an idle brain was simply a resting one — a kind of neurological standby mode. What researchers found instead was the opposite. The default mode network turns out to be extremely active during downtime, and it's doing specific, identifiable work: consolidating memories, processing emotional experiences, and — critically — making novel connections between unrelated pieces of information.

This last function is the one that matters most for creativity. Multiple studies have found that people who engage in a boring, low-stimulation task before a creativity test outperform people who went straight into the test, or who did a more engaging task beforehand. The boredom itself appears to be doing something the stimulation was blocking.

Why This Function Requires Actual Boredom

Here's the part that makes modern life a problem: the default mode network only activates when external stimulation drops low enough. Scrolling doesn't count. A podcast doesn't count. Even a mildly interesting task keeps the brain in an externally-focused mode that crowds out the internally-focused one.

This means the fifteen seconds in the elevator, filled reflexively with a phone check, wasn't neutral. It was a fifteen-second window that the brain could have used for exactly the kind of background processing it's built to do — and instead, it got redirected into consuming someone else's content. Multiply that by the dozens of small boredom-gaps most people fill automatically every day, and the accumulated cost starts to look significant.

Researchers studying this have started using the term "attention residue" to describe what happens when the mind never gets a clean, unstimulated gap: thoughts, worries, and half-finished mental threads accumulate without ever being processed, because processing requires exactly the kind of idle state we keep interrupting.

The Study That Made This Concrete

A frequently cited 2014 study published in Science asked participants to sit alone in a room with nothing to do for up to fifteen minutes — no phone, no book, nothing but their own thoughts. Many participants reported the experience as unpleasant. In a follow-up condition, participants were given the option to self-administer a mild electric shock rather than sit with their thoughts. A notable number of people — including some who had previously said they'd pay money to avoid being shocked — chose to shock themselves rather than remain alone with nothing to do.

The researchers' interpretation was blunt: many people find their own unoccupied minds difficult to tolerate, to the point of preferring physical discomfort over sitting with them.

That finding says less about boredom itself and more about how unpracticed most of us have become at tolerating it. Like most muscles, the capacity to sit in an unstimulated mind gets weaker without use — and the smartphone has made "without use" a state most people rarely, if ever, encounter anymore.

What Boredom Is Actually For

Beyond the creativity research, boredom appears to serve a specific psychological function: it's the state in which the mind processes what it hasn't had time to process. Emotional experiences that happened too fast to fully register in the moment. Half-formed ideas that need unstructured time to complete themselves. The quiet mental sorting that has to happen somewhere, and that increasingly has nowhere to happen if every idle moment gets filled.

There's also a simpler, more immediate effect: boredom tolerance appears to correlate with lower overall stress reactivity. People who can sit with an unstimulated moment without needing to escape it report, on average, better emotional regulation under pressure. The two skills may be more related than they first appear — both involve a comfort with not immediately needing to do something about a feeling.

How to Actually Practice This

You don't need to sit in an empty room for fifteen minutes, though the Science study suggests that's a genuinely useful exercise if you can tolerate it.

Smaller, more accessible versions work too:

Let one small gap in your day go unfilled. The elevator. The line at the store. The few minutes before a meeting starts. Leave the phone in your pocket and let your mind do whatever it does.

Do one boring, repetitive task without an audio companion. Folding laundry, washing dishes, a walk with no podcast. These are some of the most reliable low-cost entry points into default mode network activity.

Notice the urge to fill the gap, without immediately acting on it. The discomfort of an unfilled moment tends to peak quickly and pass. Most people never find that out, because they never wait long enough to feel it happen.

Treat boredom as information, not a problem. If a moment feels unbearably empty, that's worth noticing — it may be telling you something about how little unstructured time your mind has been getting lately.

Why This Fits Everything Else We Believe

Slow living isn't only about nature walks and unhurried mornings. Sometimes it's smaller and less photogenic than that: it's the fifteen seconds in an elevator that you let stay empty. The brain does its best background work in exactly the moments we've trained ourselves to eliminate.

Letting yourself be bored isn't giving up on being productive. Based on what the research actually shows, it might be one of the more productive things you can do.
